Synthetic Fuels and Renewables
Monday,
14 May and Tuesday, 15 May 2007
Synfuels on the basis of renewable resources will substitute
fossil based fuels to a reasonable extent in the near future. Established
technologies cover the production of biomethanol, bioethanol and biodiesel (RME)
applying fermentation processes (biomass, crops, sugar plants etc) and chemical
conversion of fats and oils. 2
nd
generation biofuels aim at biomass to liquid (BTL) fuels and bioethanol by using
lignocellulose substrates either via thermal conversion and Fischer-Tropsch
synthesis or advanced pulping processes and microbial conversion of the
cellulose and hemicellulose. For the European biofuel market alone a demand of
14 million tons of biofuels is predicted for 2010. It may further rise in the
case of CO
2
based regulations for vehicle emissions. In the view of
about 30 years renewable energy in total is expected to equalize the amount of
fossil based energy. These developments are of extraordinary importance for the
development of China’s fuel market in the near future.

Bioprocess Engineering
Monday, 14
May 2007
Biotechnology has already captured leading market positions
in the production of amino acids, vitamins and pharmaceuticals. Furthermore we
are witnessing a worldwide run on biofuels.
To achieve successful processes, optimized
biocatalysts are necessary as well as adequate technological solutions for
production and the recovery of bioproducts. The session “Bioprocess Engineering”
will provide examples of both.

Environmental
Protection
Monday, 14 May 2007
At the 2007 annual session of the National People's
Congress, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao addressed the importance of ecological and
environmental protection when seeking sustainable social and economic
development in China.
Pollution that is increasing even
faster than the economy is growing is how China’s current environmental
situation can be summarized. While the country has taken steps to protect the
environment, all efforts are coming to naught in view of the country’s
tremendous economic growth. However, the environmental costs are now surpassing
the economic gain, which requires the country to act not only for ecological but
also economic reasons. In its 11
th
five-year plan, the Chinese
government has set itself ambitious goals for environmental protection until the
year 2010, opening the environmental market with its huge potential in the
medium term.

Industrial
Safety Workshop
Tuesday, 15 May 2007
The safety of chemical plants has gained huge importance
through the global competition among chemical companies and production sites.
Only safe plants meet the requirements of operational availability as the basis
of economic success, efficient use of resources, prevention of damage to plants
and humans and last not least protection of the environment. Therefore, two
special topics of plant safety were selected to be presented by experts at
AchemAsia.
The participants of the workshops are expressly
invited to discuss their questions with the lecturers.

Sustainable Water Management for Industries and
Municipalities
Wednesday, 16 May and Thursday, 17 May
2007
The efficient use of water in industrial processes, the
consistent reuse of water and effective waste water treatment are the challenges
for a sustainable development of China’s industry and economy. China’s
innovative regulatory framework – the first nation world wide having a “law on
promotion of cleaner production in force”, combined with the revised Water Law
that enforces efficient water use – provides a strong basis for that.
In 2004 about 22% of China’s water supply was used
for industry, longterm studies expect a doubling until 2050. It is expected that
China’s water industry market will demand over US$ 120 billion by
2010.

Chemical Process
Engineering
Wednesday, 16 May 2007
The chemical industry in the People’s Republic of China had
a turnover of 166 billion (thousand million) Euro in 2005. The country is now
number three in the world rankings behind the US (448 billion Euro) and Japan
(217 billion Euro). Germany had already dropped back to fourth place (153
billion Euro) in 2004. China now has an 8.2% share of the world chemical market
(about 2 thousand billion Euro). This trend leeds to a large demand in
innovative solutions in process engineering.
Recent developments in chemical process engineering help to meet
present and future societal needs like hydrogen supply for chemical and
energetic use and environmentally benign production of consumer goods.
Nanoparticle technologies and the use of supercritical fluids give new impulses
to separation technology and catalytic processes.

Biorefineries
Wednesday, 16 May
2007
The biorefinery is a concept that has been developed in the
food and paper industries and is now being applied in biomass-based energy,
materials and chemicals production. Therefore the concept is analogous to
today's petroleum refineries, which produce multiple fuels and products from
petroleum, because a biorefinery also maximises the value derived from complex
biomass feedstocks by producing multiple products. But it relies on the best use
and valorisation of feedstock, optimization and integration of processes for a
better efficiency, optimization of inputs (water, energy, etc.) and waste
recycling/treatment.
The goal is the integrated production of bioproducts,
especially for bulk chemicals, biofuels, biolubricants and polymers, which can
improve competitiveness and eco-efficiency of biorefineries. To reach this goal
it is necessary to develop processes to add value to all fractions of the plant
biomass, to valorise by-products of other industrial systems (e.g. black liquor
in wood/paper industry, glycerol from biodiesel, whey from cheese production,
etc.), to develop downstream processing strategies (low cost recovery and
purification) and to develop closed cycle sustainable systems.

Good Manufacturing Practice -
GMP
Thursday, 17 May 2007
Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) is the term used for
guidelines governing the manufacture, testing and quality control of
pharmaceuticals, biotechnology products and active pharmaceutical ingredients.
In order to improve the standard of the Chinese pharmaceutical industry and to
guarantee the quality of pharmaceutical products, the Chinese government issued
its own GMP guidelines in the 1990s and encouraged pharmaceutical enterprises to
apply them.
At present more than 4,000
enterprises have adopted GMP in China. In this session you will hear about
technical solutions for GMP production and gain insight into GMP guidelines in
China and worldwide.
